OAKVILLE, Ont. - The Sheridan College Athletics and Recreation department announced today the hiring of Michael Barbieri as the new Assistant Coach of the Men's Rugby team.
From Woodbridge, On., Barbieri grew up playing for the Vaughan Yeomen Rugby Club and soon realized he was a natural at the game. He continued to play for the Ontario Blues as a junior, and he had his first professional experience in Italy at Parma, where he played until 2007.
Barbieri and his elder brother Robert, were teammates in Parma and they both made their debuts for a National team on June 10th, 2006, however, Micheal represented Canada against the England Saxons in the Churchill Cup and his brother Robert, represented the Italian National team.
Following that, Barbieri moved to Benetton Treviso, where he won the Super Italy Championship in 2008-2009. In 2009, he moved to L'Aquila after winning one Championship, he retired from competitive sports.
Since his retirement, Barbieri has now returned to Canada and has coached the Yeomen Rugby Club's Mens Program for several years.
